Halloween Parade


The eve of Halloween is a fun time in New York, specially at the Halloween Parade which takes place in Greenwich Village every year. It's already 33rd year, since the first one and this parade now is the biggest Halloween celebration in USA in which more then two million people participating.

It was started by mask maker and puppeteer who lived in this neighborhood and liked to walk with his children and friends who where dressed in costumes from house to house and each year more and more people were attending this parade. Now it has grown up to 50,000 people from around the world who are participating in this event. Anybody can take a part in the parade if they have a costume on.

Puppeteers, marching bands, jugglers, dancers and other street performers are contributing the parade too. To take a part in the parade you can simply enroll in a group at 6th Avenue South of Spring Street, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m. the show will begin. The team which organizes the parade is welcoming as many people to join the event as possible, the more is better. The range of costumes is very diverse from common creepy Halloween costumes, to modern costumes on the topic of contemporary occasions. Most of the people who are joining the parade have really impressive costumes, but nobody will be rejected for poor costume. The goal is to have a good time and get pleasure from the experience.

The 12th annual contest for the greatest costume will take place this year; every person who is participating in the parade is necessarily coming into the contest which first prize will be five plan tickets to any place of their choice by plane of Jet Blue Airlines. In case if you just curios to look at the parade, the parade way goes up 6th Avenue from Spring Street to 21st Street.

The most jam-packed streets are connecting Bleeker and 14th Street. If you want to get a good place where you would be able to see you should get there early. The parade will start at 7:00 and finishes at 10:30. The walkways are getting crowded very quickly so be aware of it. People who live in New York can see the parade on TV on NY1 News from 8:00 to 9:30.

It's going to be difficult to find a parking space and a lot of the streets will be closed therefore you should take a subway downtown if you want to be there when the parade is taken place. The parade organizing team welcomes helpers to run the parade. If it's something what you would be interested in doing you should let them know what exactly you would like to do and they will do their best to have capacity for you. The work they need help with includes walking with a giant puppets, helping with the line of march or assisting in some of the many community workshops. You don't have to have an experience.

If you don't fill like walking with the parade or looking at it from sidewalks on the street, you can get yourself a table in the one of many bars in the neighborhood and wait until the participants will come in after the parade is over. This is a great chance to get together with people who participated in the parade and observe their costumes up close. Be aware that bars are getting crowded very fast.
